#no2LGBTHate Targets online hate speech.
Curve, America’s Best-selling magazine for lesbians and queer and bisexual women, LOTL, Australia’s leading lesbian magazine, DIVA, the UK’s newsstand magazine for queer women, and other entities are joining the Thunderclap campaign launched by DIVA co-owner Linda Riley to address online anti-LGBTQ abuse and hate speech.
“In today’s world, social media is unavoidable,” said Merryn Johns, New York-based editor-in-chief of Curve.“LGBTQ people should not be subject to hate speech and vilification simply when scrolling through their Twitter feeds, nor be targeted directly by anti-LGBTQ trolls,” Johns continued. “It’s time that the entrepreneurs who created this medium take responsibility for it as a platform. Steps must be taken to ensure that Twitter is not a tool for disseminating discrimination and hatred of any kind.”
“Anti-LGBT trolls have safety and anonymity in a platform that should be democratic—not discriminatory and divisive,” said UK LGBT activist and co-owner of DIVA magazine, Linda Riley. “Simply put, these are ‘virtual’ hate crimes and cyberbullying at their worst. Troll-storms are an organized form of harassment and have real consequences for the mental and physical wellbeing of the LGBTQ community, both on Twitter and off. Twitter needs to identify and stop hate speech online,” concluded Riley.
The #no2LGBTHate campaign calls for the global LGBTQ community and their allies to sign up to the Thunderclap campaign which culminates in a social media message sent on Wednesday 1st February 2017 at 4pm GMT, 11am EST across the Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr accounts of everyone that has joined the Thunderclap #no2LGBTHate. The message will be:
We need Twitter to silence LGBT hate. Homophobia, biphobia and transphobia have no place online #no2LGBTHate
A variety of Twitter accounts have been set up with the sole aim of attacking LGBTQ people and urgent action is needed by Twitter.
