The first Pride parade since India’s Supreme Court recriminalised homosexuality has taken place in Delhi. Hundreds of protestors took to the streets with flags, banners and balloons on Sunday amid chants of “I’m gay, that’s okay” and “freedom”.
Last December, the law to criminalise gay sex was reinstated, punishable with up to 10 years in prison.
In what is the second-most populated country in the world, LGBT activists said the ruling made them feel like second-class citizen and would increase discrimination and prejudice.
A new legal challenge to December’s Supreme Court judgement is expected and a date for a hearing will decided by Chief Justice of India in the coming months.
