Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, of popular German team Schalke, told Bunte magazine that gay players should have the courage to come out because fans care more about their performance than their sexuality.
Speaking to the weekly lifestyle magazine, Neuer said: “Those who are gay should say so. It relieves a burden. And the fans will get over it quickly. What matters is the performance delivered by the player, not his sexual preference.”
The only professional footballer ever to have come out in Germany is second division player Marcus Urban, but only revealed his sexuality after he had retired.
