The mega-talented singer and actor Janelle Monáe, who featured in OutNewsGlobal’s top three pansexuals in 2020, has confirmed that she is non-binary. In an interview on US chat show Red Table Talk, she said: “I’m non-binary, so I just don’t see myself as a woman, solely.”

She continued, “I feel all of my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than the ‘he’ or the ‘she.’ And if I am from God, I am everything. I am everything. But I will always, always stand with women. I will always stand with black women. But I just see everything I am. Beyond the binary.”

Monáe came out as pansexual in 2018 and, in June 2020, almost came out as non-binary, tweeting the hashtag #IAmNonbinary, before clarifying that her tweet was a show of solidarity “in support of Non-Binary Day and to bring more awareness to the community” rather than confirmation of any new identity.

During her conversation on Red Table Talk, Monáe confirmed her polyamory before describing how she explained her new identity to her religious family:

“My whole family is church … church, church,” they explained. “So I was just like ‘what does it mean to go against your whole family on this thing?’ But I was ready! I was like: if they don’t love me, don’t call me asking for no money. You will not get my LGBTQIA+ money. How about that?”

Note: Monáe has yet to confirm her preferred pronouns so we’re sticking with she/her – the pronouns she has been known by up until now – until we hear otherwise.
