France’s Socialist government on Wednesday adopted a draft law to authorise gay marriage and adoption despite fierce opposition from the Roman Catholic Church and the right-wing opposition.

Democrat Tammy Baldwin became the first openly gay member of the US Senate when she narrowly defeated Republican Tommy Thompson in a divisive and expensive election on Tuesday.

The re-election of President Obama was not the only win for gay people in the Unities States last nigh. Maine and Maryland became the first states to back same-sex marriage at the ballot box Tuesday night, breaking a long losing streak.
