The sterotypical engineer may be a white, straight, cis-gendered man, but this eye-opening new video series shows that there are plenty of LGBT people thriving in the industry.
As part of LGBT History Month, the Royal Academy of Engineering, InterEngineering and Mott MacDonald have teamed up to launch a video campaign profiling twenty different LGBT engineers.
Dr Mark McBride-Wright, Chair and Co-founder of InterEngineering, explains:
“As a profession, we are at the beginning of a journey creating an inclusive industry for everyone and I hope these videos will play a part in attracting LGBT+ students to the engineering industry.”
One of the participants is Kimberly Bartlett, a lighting engineer and married lesbian, who says:
“I have noticed a significant change from the ten years I have been in the industry. We’re getting a lot more diversity, a lot more women, more LGBT people.”
Another participant is Amanda McKay, a nuclear quality director and bisexual trans woman, who declares:
“The ability to be oneself at work is quite empowering… Coming out was a very powerful thing for me, and being accepted gave such a confidence boost.”
