A Nebraska woman who was kicked out of a religious college for being a lesbian said she is considering how to proceed.

Grace University in Omaha expelled Danielle Powell, 24, after officials learned she’d engaging in a romantic relationship with another female student. Powell said she went to the school not expecting the strict biblical codes of conduct — and that she didn’t realise she was a lesbian until after enrolling at Grace.

Now, Powell says the school is demanding she repay aid she was given to help offset tuition and that the school won’t release her transcripts, preventing her from enrolling at another college, the Omaha World-Herald said Saturday.

A school spokesman denied Grace is withholding Powell’s transcripts but cited privacy constraints in declining to talk specifically about the matter.

Powell said she’s heard from a private lawyer who’s offered free legal services should she decide to sue Grace University, where about 500 students are enrolled. Roosevelt College in Chicago offered Powell free tuition and to pay off her debt to Grace. Others have offered financial help, as well. She said she hasn’t decided what to do.
