Leaked memos suggest the US Army will allow the former analyst access hormone therapy.

Chelsea Manning, the US intelligence Analyst who disclosed classified information via WikiLeaks, has been told that she will be allowed to undergo hormone therapy while serving 35 years at Fort Leavenworth military prison.

A February 5 memo obtained by USA Today, written by Colonel Erica Nelson said: “After carefully considering the recommendation that [hormone treatment] is medically appropriate and necessary, and weighing all associated safety and security risks presented, I approve adding [hormone treatment] to Inmate Manning’s treatment plan.”

The move is a milestone for the US military, which still classifies transgender people as mentally ill and therefore refuse them from serving.

Manning has previously sued the Army for withholding her treatment and repeatedly ignoring her gender dysphoria.
