UgandasmallIn the face of vast international pressure Uganda has shelved the Anti-Homosexuality Bill that was due to be debated last week in parliament.

The legislation would have made it legal to execute homosexuals for committing ‘aggravated sexuality’, for ‘repeat offenders’ and for same sex activity with minors and people with disabilities.

ALL OUT’s campaign, which drew half a million signatures from 192 countries, was a truly global concerted effort. It was a unanimous cry against injustice and something Uganda could not afford to ignore.

Yet this mighty step for Ugandan gays is only the first in an effort to overcome the country’s ingrained homophobia.

While the bill has been abandoned this time, conservatives are pledging to bring it back later this year.
