Trangender politician Yollada Suanyot has won an election seat as councillor for local government in Nan province in northern Thailand.
The 30-year-old beat two male opponents to win the seat, with 3,808 votes on Sunday, running as an independent against a candidate from the nation’s ruling Pheu Thai party, the Global Post.
Suanyot is president of the Trans Female Association of Thailand, said her position on the Provincial Administration Organization (PAO)Council will help her work better with the government while solving problems concerning the rights of women and trans-female groups, according to Gay Star News.
Suanyot underwent gender realignment surgery when she was 16. In Thailand you cannot legally change your gender, but Thai society is well-known to be accepting of transgenders.
