Two trans people, both part of a group of performers at a wedding function, have been shot in Peshawar, Pakistan. One of the victims, known as Shakeel, aka Gul Panra, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Khyber Teaching Hospital while the other, Chahat, remains in a critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment.

Police Superintendent Wattoo confirmed that, as the performers were preparing to leave the wedding venue, an unknown number of men opened fire on them, hitting both Shakeel and Chahat while the remaining members of the troupe fled for cover.

Transgender people are protected under Pakistani laws but remain vulnerable to attack.

The incident has prompted an outpouring of anger in Pakistan, with the hashtag  #JusticeForGulpanra trending on Pakistani Twitter.
