20090611052623Today is International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, the day when people, organizations and governments in almost 90 countries will show their support against homophobia and transphobia.

IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia) was launched in 2004 by a group of gay activists to commemorate the day the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the list of mental disorders in 1990. Today is an opportunity for all to fight for sexual diversity and gender freedom.

Today, when even the East Anglian NHS Trust flew the rainbow flag, over 50 European MPs took part in 17 different languages to tell young people it does get better; Irish politicans issued a statement of support to the LGBT community and social network Grindr sent out the following message to 3.5 million users: “Today is the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, celebrated in 90+ countries. GLBT people across the globe face extreme forms of discrimination daily. The Day promotes a world of tolerance, respect and freedom. Support the cause by adding the word IDAHO to your profile for a day”

The organisation is urging people to take action by flying a rainbow flag at their home, work or school and join the Enough is Enough! campaign to take action against homophobia.

“The Day is about creating a space for everyone to take action,” said IDAHO international coordinator Joel Bedos.
