The surprising results of a survey conducted in America have shown that 56% of Catholics in the country are tolerant of homosexuality – in comparison with less than 46% of the general public.
The survey was conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute. It also found that 43% of Catholics were in favour of gay marriage and 31% were in favour of gay couples having civil partnerships.
Respondents under the age of 35 made up a large proportion of those who gave pro-gay answers.
