dharun-ravi-abcAfter showing no remorse throughout his trial, Dharun Ravi has issued a statement apologising for his actions.

Ravi, 20, used a webcam to record his  roommate in a romantic encounter with another man in their dormitory at Rutgers University in New Jersey without him knowing.   He then attempted to share the video with other students at the university through the use of social media. His roommate, 18-year-old Tyler Clementi, committed suicide shortly after, jumping from George Washington Bridge. The students had known each other for just three weeks.

According to NPR news, Ravi’s lawyer issued his statement which read, “My behaviour and actions, which at no time were motivated by hate, bigotry, prejudice or desire to hurt, humiliate or embarrass anyone, were nonetheless the wrong choices and decisions. I apologise to everyone affected by those choices.”

In March Ravi was convicted on all counts with which he was charged and sentenced to 30 days in prison, plus a $10,000 payment toward a program to help victims of hate crimes and a $1095 victims’ surcharge. Ravi has opted to begin serving immediately although he could remain free while his lawyers appeal the case, reported The Inquirer.  Many believe the sentence is too lenient for a hate crime, despite this, Garden State Equality – the states gay rights organisation, reported they were happy Ravi had publically apologised.

Clementi’s parents have begun to raise awareness of issues surrounding bullying and suicide by launching The Tyler Clementi Foundation.
