A freshman student at the University of Carolina may face charges over false allegations of a homophobic attack.
Quinn Matney, 19, told campus police that a drunk stranger approached him in the early hours of the morning, said “Here is a taste of hell, you fag”, then burned him with a hot object.
Further investigations revealed that the assault did not take place. The university has said that Matney is likely to face charges over the allegations. No information has been released explaining why Matney decided to claim that the attack had taken place.
In 2008, another UNC student was charged over false allegations of violence. Brian Sharpe claimed he had been pistol whipped during a robbery on campus; it later transpired he had hit himself with his grandfather’s gun after he discovered his girlfriend was cheating on him.
