The Oscar nominated film based on the transgender pioneer, Lili Elbe, and starring Eddie Redmayne, has been pulled from cinemas in six Arab countries over complaints of ‘xmoral depravity’.

Jordan stated that the film ‘promoted homosexuality and gender transformation’ as the reason for banning it from cinemas. The United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar have also banned the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Qatar was the first country to ban the film over what they deemed “culturally unacceptable content” and “depravity”.

Writing on Twitter, the culture ministry for Qatar said: “We would like to inform you that we have contacted the concerned administration and the screening of the Danish film is now banned from cinemas. We thank you for your unwavering vigilance.”
