Same-sex couples in South Australia can now legally adopt children as changes to adoption legislation come into effect.

A bill containing the changes was among a number to pass SA parliament late last year aimed at ending discrimination against the LGBTIQ community.

Child Development Minister Susan Close met with same-sex couples and their families at Parliament House on Friday to mark the occasion.

The difficulties of British same-sex adoptive parents Shaun and Blue Douglas-Galley in bringing their adopted children to South Australia led them to lobby for legal reform, including a letter writing campaign to 70 politicians and an online petition that gathered 27,00 signatures.
