Under the current Serbian parliament, it’s largely a role of formality, but Ana Brnabić is demanding visibility.

Serbia is a largely conservative country, with some pretty horrifying statistics on attitudes towards the LGBTIQ community that we won’t repeat here. So the appointment of Ana Brnabić as Prime Minister is huge news for visibility in the Balkans.

Brnabić was appointed to the role by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who, in doing so, rings true to speculations that Vučić is looking to turn Serbia towards the EU, resisting strong influential pressure from Russia.

Brnabić has an MBA in marketing from The University of Hull in Britain, and worked in the US before turning to Serbian politics.

“If elected in parliament, I will run the government with dedication and responsibility and I will do my job honestly and with love,” Brnabić told Tanjug News prior to her appointment.

Brnabić’s success is monumental worldwide, joining the ranks of only two other gay PM’s in Europe, both of whom are male.
