The Comporta region, located 120 km south of Lisbon, is regarded as one of the most exclusive areas in Portugal to own a summer home and provides a good example of where overseas investment is popular.

The region has seen the launch of a large number of new hotel and resort projects as well as the development of new private houses and apartments along the northwest Alentejo coast. New emerging “hotspots” include Carvalhal village and the area of Melides where demand is strong due to its proximity to the sea and the hills, and the availability of large farmhouses, offering a rural lifestyle and privacy.

“Portugal is one of the most sought-after countries in Europe to invest due to its advantageous taxation laws, the Golden Visa programme, its pleasant climate and the high standard of living. The combination of these reasons, together with a low rate of coronavirus cases this year and region’s proximity to Lisbon, is why we are registering strong demand in Comporta,” explains Vitor Paiva, Licence Partner of Engel & Völkers Comporta.

Engel & Völkers expects investments will grow over the next 12 months. “Many private buyers will be looking for a safe haven to escape from the cities. We anticipate an increase in local and international buyers due to the new development opportunities available for investors together with the restoration of tourism sector that is expected to pick up again in the second quarter of 2020,” concludes Vitor Paiva.
