Wedding_RingsA new opinion poll shows that over two-thirds of Scots support equal marriage and believe that religious organisations should have the right to conduct gay weddings if they want to.

The Ipsos Mori poll of 1,003 Scots shows that overall, 64% supported same-sex marriage, with the Scottish Government due to publish the results of its marriage equality consultation later this month.

The survey was conducted on behalf of the Equality Network, LGBT Youth Scotland and the Scottish Youth Parliament, the poll reveals 26% remain opposed to the move and 21% disagree with the statement over the rights of religious groups to conduct marriages.

Tom French, policy co-ordinator for the Equality Network, said: “Scotland has spoken and the message is clear; there is now overwhelming support for equal marriage across the country and in the Scottish Parliament.

“This record level of support gives the Scottish Government the green light they need to announce legislation that will give lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people full marriage equality; both civil and religious.”

Last week, it was announced that 69 MSPs out of 129 have pledged to support a change in the law.

If the Government decides to legislate, there would be a further consultation on a draft Bill, and a finalised Bill could be introduced into the Scottish Parliament as soon as 2013.
