Tributes have been paid to a teenage boy who was found dead in his home weeks after revealing he was gay online.

Liam McAlpine, 14, was found dead in his bedroom at an address in Elgin Drive, Glenrothes, on Sunday.

Last month, the teenager had posted videos on YouTube where he had spoken about being gay and suffering bullying in the past.

In one video he said he saw people being bullied “all the time” in his school and called on teachers to “get the bullying sorted”.

Head teacher Avril McNeill said: “We are all deeply saddened by the news of Liam’s death and our thoughts are with his family.

“Liam was a cheerful, pleasant and likeable pupil with an excellent attendance record. He will be missed within our school community.

“We have a robust anti-bullying policy at Glenrothes High. I’d urge anyone who is feeling threatened or vulnerable to report this to someone they trust.”

Liam’s shattered family said they were “devastated by the loss of our beloved son, grandson, nephew and brother.”

Dozens of tributes were also paid to Liam on social media after the tragedy.

Police Scotland said Liam’s death was being treated as “unexplained” and investigations were continuing.
