madonna-jan-2012-giFollowing on from the banning of gay pride marches in the Russian capital Moscow last week, activists in the city of St Petersburg are now suing the Material Girl singer for promoting gay rights at her concert on 9th August.

The city passed a law in March that banned the promotion of homosexuality to minors, and activists state that there were children as young as 12 at the show. During her performance Madonna asked audience members to raise their pink armbands in support of gay and lesbian people at the concert.

Alexei Kolotkov, one of the activists who filed the suit in the St Petersburg court said: “Maybe someone does not see the link but after Madonna’s concert maybe some boy becomes gay, some girl becomes lesbian, fewer children are born as a result and this big country cannot defend its borders – for me it causes moral suffering.”

Madonna is also being criticised in the country for voicing her support for punk girl group Pussy Riot who were sentenced to two years in jail on Friday for their protest in an orthodox church earlier this year.
