The House of Lords have received a letter appealing to them to reject the challenge to civil partnership rules.
Baroness O’Cathain argues that the new regulations may force religious bodies to perform ceremonies for gay and straight couples, and if they refuse, prevent them from performing all marriage ceremonies.
The religious groups behind the letter say that ““We recognise fully the rights of those who did not wish to do so and are clear that the legislation protects the freedom to say no as well as yes.”
The new regulations came into force on 5th December to allow civil partnerships to take place on religious grounds.
