Over 60 staff and patrons at Q Bar on Shanghai’s waterfront were taken into custody after a police raid.
Police entered the bar just after 1am on Sunday, allegedly prompted by reports that a dancer was performing a ‘pornographic’ show.
The men were held without food and water until Sunday afternoon. One man claims he was forced to sign a false statement which said the dancer wore transparent underwear which customers were putting money into.
Despite being decriminalised in 1997, homosexuality is still taboo in Shanghai and gay clubs largely operate on an underground basis.
