The Jewish community in Warsaw has vowed to protect LGBT+ people from statements by Polish President Andrzej Duda.

Speaking yesterday, 16th June, a spokesperson said, “We Jews – the descendants of Holocaust survivors – cannot and do not want to remain indifferent to words that dehumanise LGBT people.

“One is obliged to show solidarity with all victims of injustice, prejudice and violence. We have the right to say no to discrimination against LGBT people.

“We support sexual minorities and support their efforts to have all Polish citizens equally.

According to the Jewish community, people will eventually turn against hate speech, prejudice and aggression. The spokesperson did not mention Duda by name, but instead spoke in general terms about politicians in the presidential election campaign. However, the declaration is clearly directed against statements by the national conservative head of state and politicians from the ruling party Law and Justice (PiS).

Duda and leading members of his campaign staff have condemned so-called LGBT ideology. comparing this “ideology” with the communist indoctrination.

The Association of Fighters of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 against the German occupiers had said on Monday: “There must be no consent to humiliation of sexual minorities in a country in which homosexuals have been killed by fascists because.”

Presidential elections will be held in Poland the Sunday after next. Duda leads the way in opinion polls with around 40 percent. It is therefore likely that there will be a runoff election.
