StageAccording to the results of a new survey conducted by Equity and published by The Stage News, almost half of gay performers in the UK have not come out to their agents.

However, 81% said they were out in their professional life and 94% said they were openly gay to fellow performers.

The survey also found that more than a third have experienced some form of homophobia in the industry, with many fearing that being openly gay to agents or casting directors would limit the roles they were offered.

Equity spokesman Martin Brown said “The key part of this campaign, which will be a continuing process across this year and into the future, is raising the issue of being out among members and in the industry and challenging the perception that because the entertainment industry is perceived to be tolerant of differing sexualities there are no problems at all,” he said.
