Vulnerable young people are still getting kicked out of their homes when they come out – and it’s destroying their lives
As tickets for the thirteenth National Student Pride in 2018 are released, this year, alongside the Albert Kennedy Trust, NSP plan to get people talking about why one in four homeless young people identify as LGBT+.
Figures by The Albert Kennedy Trust show that of young homeless people, LGBT+ kids are much more likely to be suffering:
● One in four of homeless young people identify as LGBT+
● Nearly four in five say coming out to their parents was the main factor in becoming homeless
● Once homeless, LGBT youth are more likely to experience targeted violence and discrimination, develop substance abuse problems, be exposed to sexual exploitation, and engage in higher levels of risky sexual behaviour, than their non-LGBT peers
The event will be held over three days at the University of Westminster’s Marylebone campus with panels, performances and the UK’s biggest LGBT careers fair. And of course, there will be lots of partying to be done on the evenings at London’s G-A-Y venues!
Chair of Student Pride Hatti Smart said: “The figures from the Albert Kennedy Trust are truly devastating. I’m lucky my mum was very supportive when I came out. But for many, it’s a different story and they are kicked out of their homes.
“We hope our event this year inspires the media, influencers and activists to support charities such as AKT and lift the voices of young LGBT+ homeless people”
What is National Student Pride?
Now in its 13th year, NSP is back in London at the University of Westminster’s Marylebone campus. Culminating in a main daytime festival on Saturday 10 February – with panels, performances and a careers fair – over 1700 LGBT students from across the UK will be take part in the weekend’s festivities.
What to expect from the 2018 NSP
The whole event starts with an opening night party with one of Britain’s biggest Drag Queens, BGT’s Danny Beard. NSP has teamed up with My Genderation, Attitude Magazine and Gay Star News for panels, and their LGBT YouTubers space will return again after last year’s success!
