220px-Official_portrait_of_Barack_ObamaA Washington Post-ABC News poll released on Wednesday showed that 53 percent of Americans said gay marriage should be legal, a new high. Thirty-nine percent, a new low, said it should be illegal.

A separate poll showed that just 7 percent of registered voters who responded said Obama’s public support for gay marriage raised concerns about voting for him, while 31 percent said the president’s announcement reinforced their support for his campaign, and for 62 percent, it did not make a difference, according to the NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll.

Though the White House insisted Obama always planned to make his views on gay marriage known this summer, some aides worried that doing so could hurt him politically with socially conservative voters in swing states like Virginia and North Carolina, reported the Associated Press.

Early in the day, the Obama campaign announced the national launch of an outreach effort, “Obama Pride: LGBT Americans for Obama.”

On Wednesday, as Obama presided over the first Air Force Academy graduation with openly gay cadets, the Obama campaign released a video narrated by lesbian actor Jane Lynch, stating Obama’s record of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people.

“It’s not just a matter of head, it’s a matter of heart,” Obama says in the video. “It’s who I am. It’s what I care about.”
