The election of Spain’s new prime minister Mariano Rajoy has sent waves through the country’s LGBT community as they fear he may want to scrap marriage equality.
Although the new prime minister has said he supports civil unions for same sex couples he is opposed to marriage for them.
Rajoy of the conservative Popular Party has already appealed to Spain’s Constitutional Court against the 2005 law granting same-sex couples the right to marry.
Since the laws inception 20,000 gay couples have married, but fears that the new PM may aim to change this law has led to an increase in the number of same sex weddings which have taken place over the last few weeks.
In 2005 Spain became the third member of the EU to allow same-sex weddings alongside Belgium and the Netherlands.
Rajoy is also planning to remove the possibility for 16 or 17-year olds to have an abortion without parental consent.
