Yellow Power Ranger Trini will be “questioning a lot about who she is”.

How could 90s cult TV show Power Rangers get any better? It’s already got rainbow coloured superhero outfits, a kickass theme tune and a heartwarming message about teamwork and diversity. Here’s how: by making one of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers totally queer.

In the new film version of the hit programme, Yellow Power Ranger Trini will be dealing with her sexuality and coming to terms with her feelings for another girl.

Director Dean Israelite spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the character of Trini, played by actress and singer Becky G:

“She’s questioning a lot about who she is. She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”

Go, go Power Rangers!

Power Rangers is out in UK cinemas on Friday 24 March.
