IowaIowa’s House of Representatives has voted 62 to 37 for the Iowa Marriage Amendment, which will ban gay couples from marrying. Gay marriage was legalised in the state in 2009.

The leader of the Democrats, who are the majority on the Senate, will attempt to stop a debate on the amendment reaching the upper chamber. Mike Gronstal called the proposed law change “a big step backwards for the constitutional rights of all Iowans”.
