Miss_California_LesbiansFor the first time in its 60 year history, the Miss California 2012 pageant has had two openly gay girls competing for the crown.

The state pageant winner goes on to represent California and compete in Miss USA, the national pageant.

Jenelle Hutcherson, 26, (pictured on the right) and Mollie Thomas, 19 (pictured on the left) will be competed against more than 400 other women in the traditionally conservative event.

Organisers told the LA Times that the pageant “will emphasize individuality and push the envelope even further… This year’s event will be bigger and reflect the progressive attitudes of the contestants.”

Although neither girl made it through to the top ten, both said they hope that their part in the pageant has been a big step for American LGBTQ community.
