The Sexual Independence arts festival which has been held every year sine 2008 was banned by Police for threatening public order.

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim joined public outcry over the banning of the event which aimed to stop discrimination.

On Tuesday, Anwar Ibrahim aid that he supported the movement, and he criticized the police for what were considered ‘extreme’ methods which were used to stop the event.

The organisers of the event were unhappy with restrictions placed upon them to conduct workshops and hold performances, the said: “The intimidating displays of hatred and ignorance towards us and calls for us to be shut down demonstrate why we absolutely need a safe space and event like Sexual Independence.”

Activist Marina Mahathir who has previously launched the event has said that it was filled with discussions and activities organised to spread awareness about the gay and transsexual community.
