LiamFoxFormer Defence Secretary Liam Fox has said the Government’s plan to legislate for same-sex marriages is “divisive, ill thought through and constitutionally wrong”.

In a letter to constituents the Tory MP for North Somerset was particularly critical of planned legislation drawn up to allow same-sex marriage which he said appeared to have been written “on the hoof”.

He said a legal bar on the Church of England performing such ceremonies was “absurd and anomalous” when it did not also extend to the Catholic Church.

Dr Fox said the anomaly could lead to legal challenges.

He stressed he was not anti-gay and as a doctor believed same-sex relationship were “a variant of the spectrum of human sexual behaviour and should be treated with tolerance and respect”.
