A Liberal candidate has won a by-election in North Sydney, becoming the first out gay member of the House of Representatives, which is Australia’s lower house of parliament, reported the Star Observer.

Trent Zimmerman, 47, won the by-election with 47.6 percent of the vote. Australia’s Senate has had several out gay members, but Zimmerman is the first to be elected to the House.

He told the Star Observer, “I’m extraordinarily proud the electorate didn’t see [being gay] as an issue. For me, I’d love to see the day when sexuality wasn’t an issue, but I know it’s not there yet.”
