Justine Greening has been appointed Education Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities, taking over from Nicky Morgan who had previously held the role for two years.

Last month, two days after Britain voted to leave the EU, Greening, came out on Twitter, which coincided with Pride In London, tweeting that she campaigned Stronger In “but sometimes you’re better off out”.

The announcement means Ms Greening is the first openly LGBT woman to serve in the UK cabinet.

Stonewall, the equality campaign group, welcomed Greening, and tweeted: “Welcome @justinegreening, new Minister for Education & Women and Equalities. We really look forward to working with you.”

Educated in Rotherham, Ms Greening is the daughter of a steelworker. Last year, she told the Independent on Sunday she would have “got nowhere” without education.

“I passionately believe that everybody has something that they do really well. If they can find that then people can be amazingly self-motivated,” she said.

Other women given top jobs in May’s cabinet include Amber Rudd, who fills the vacancy left by May as Home Secretary, and Liz Truss, the new Justice Minister.
