Matt_BomerRenowned author and screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis has caused controversy by questioning whether openly gay actor Matt Bomer would be able to play S&M lothario Christian Grey in the hotly anticipated film adaption of the steamy novel ’50 Shades of Grey’. Bomer, who has two children with his partner Simon Halls, recently sent both men and women’s hearts (and loins) fluttering after his sizzling performance as a straight, married stripper in Magic Mike.

The author, who is bisexual himself, originally made the comments via twitter and has faced a huge backlash since.

His original tweet said: “Fifty Shades of Grey: Casting Matt Bomer is the equivalent as casting Jesse Tyler Ferguson…” Jesse Tyler Ferguson is also famous for being a gay actor, playing a gay role on the hit US sitcom Modern Family.

Following several days of comments accusing him of homophobia he attempted to clarify his comments with a series of tweets:

“Let’s finalise this. Matt Bomer is totally hot and a very good actor. He is NOT right for Christian Grey and it complicates the role.”

“Okay I’ll say it. Matt Bomer isn’t right for Christian Grey because he is openly gay. He’s great for other roles but this is too big a game. “

“I am NOT discriminating Matt Bomer because of his sexuality. Fifty Shades of Grey demands an actor that is genuinely into women. Get it?!?”

“I actually think it’s cool that women want Matt Bomer as Christian Grey. It means that we’ve moved beyond stereotypes and that gay is hot…”

Unsurprisingly these tweets did little to placate those who were accusing him of homophobia and of enforcing an out-dated stereotype of gay men.

It now seems that Bret has been taken off the shortlist to write the screenplay for the book.
