For many of us, the pandemic has caused anxiety, stress and money worries. Many sectors have been well-supported by the government but many people in the creative industries have been left out in the cold.

The effects are being felt by almost everyone but it is the young who are bearing the brunt. Young people who, just a few months ago, were looking forward to taking their first steps on the path to a lifelong career are finding their opportunities either severely limited or completely non-existent, creating uncertainty and having an adverse affect on their mental health.

That’s why, as the editor of OutNewsGlobal, I have launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise £5,000. This money will go towards employing two young LGBTQ+ journalists at a time when most media outlets are being forced to let people go.

Through his Pay It Forward campaign, the Mayor of London will match each donation pound for pound so, if we reach our £5,000, we’ll have £10,000 to help us achieve our goal. Our hope is that this £10,000 injection will allow us to subsidise our new journalists’ wages for a few months, by which time the economy would have improved and our own advertising revenue will have returned to pre-pandemic levels.

I know that times are tough right now and not many of us have the luxury of cash to spare, but please help if you can. Every single penny of what we raise will support this initiative, delivering much needed hope to two young journalists and helping to keep LGBTQ+ media alive.
