GLAAD has announced the list of nominees for the 28th annual GLAAD Media Awards.
The awards ceremony honours “fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives.”
Competing for the distinction of Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage are Cosmopolitan, Teen Vogue, Seventeen, Time and The Advocate.
In film category, the Oscar-nominated Moonlight is up against Star Trek Beyond for Outstanding Film — Wide Release. This category had only two nominations due to the “mainstream film industry’s dearth of LGBT-inclusive storylines at Hollywood movie studios.,” GLAAD notes.
Faring slightly better was the Limited Release category, which featured The Handmaiden, Naz & Maalik, Other People, Spa Night, and Those People.
In addition, the Drama category features The Fosters, Grey’s Anatomy, Hap and Leonard, How to Get Away With Murder, The OA, Orphan Black, Shadowhunters, Shameless, Supergirl, and Wynonna Earp.
There were also many notable nominations in television. Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Netflix’s Grace and Frankie, ABC’s Modern Family, Amazon’s One Mississippi, ABC’s The Real O’Neals, Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe, Starz’s Survivor’s Remorse, Seeso’s Take My Wife, and Amazon’s Transparent all up for Outstanding Comedy Series.
“For nearly 30 years, the GLAAD Media Awards have set the bar for media representations of LGBTQ people,” said GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “At a time when progress is at a critical juncture, it is imperative that Hollywood tell more LGBTQ stories that reflect the community’s rich diversity – and build understanding that brings all communities closer together.”
“This year’s nominees have created images and storylines that challenge misconceptions and broaden understanding, accelerating acceptance and equality for LGBTQ people across the globe,” she added.
The awards will be handed out at ceremonies in Los Angeles on April 1 and in New York on May 6.
