Girls Aloud’s Sarah Harding has taken to Twitter to announce that she has been receiving treatment for breast cancer since earlier this year but that, despite the best efforts of the NHS, the cancer has spread to other parts of her body.

The 38-year-old shot to fame when Girls Aloud won ITV’s Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, racking up a series of twenty top ten hits and catapulting the band to instant fame. Harding went on to star alongside Rupert Everett in the 2007 comedy film St. Trinians.

In a series of Twitter posts, the pop star wrote “Earlier this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and a couple of weeks ago I received the devastating news that the cancer has advanced to other parts of my body.

 “I’m currently undergoing weekly chemotherapy sessions and I am fighting as hard as I possibly can.”

The singer went on to thank her family and the NHS before appealing for privacy.

Harding’s announcement has rocked the world of showbusiness, with her former Girls Aloud bandmates being joined by countless others in offering love and support.
