george_clooney_01George Clooney is to appear in a play chronicling the battle of the same-sex marriage bill in California.

Gay marriage was made legal in California in a landmark move in1998.  However just six months later, a controversial ballot initiative, Proposition 8, outlawed the move.

Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black who penned Milk put together the script for “8” based on research and transcripts of the court battle from Perry v. Shwarzenegger.

The proceeds from the play will go towards a fundraiser for the American Foundation for Equal Rights, an organisation that has fought to overturn Proposition 8.

Clooney has said “It is astonishing that gay and lesbian Americans are still treated as second-class citizens. I am confident that, very soon, the laws of this nation will reflect the basic truth that gay and lesbian people -like all human beings – are born equal in dignity and rights”.
