January 17th is the 33rd birthday of historic LGBTQ bookshop Gay’s the Word.

Based in London, GtW is regarded as one of the longest running lesbian and gay bookshops in Europe, having opened in 1979 with help from London Mayoral candidate Ken Livingstone to secure premises on Marchmont Street in Bloomsbury.

Ernest Hole, one of the founders of the iconic bookshop said “[it] remains vital, a cornerstone of the gay community.  It should be a source of pride for us all.  I am certainly proud of it and my part in it.”

Today the shop will be giving away chocolate chip birthday cup-cakes all day and Prosecco from 5.30pm.
