waiterA gay waiter who fell victim to sustained homophobic bullying at the restaurant where he worked has won £21,500 compensation.

Vincent Ma issued a discrimination claim against the Yauatcha Chinese restaurant in London’s West End. He described to an employment tribunal the prolonged harassment that he had received from his boss and other co-workers at the Soho restaurant.

One incident involved two male managers humiliating him by simulating gay sex acts in front of him and there was another in which Ma’s boss mockingly asked him, “Did you like it?”, after a customer tweaked the 31-year-old waiter’s nipple.

Ma, who suffers from type 2 diabetes, said that he had also been subject to sexual harassment by his duty manager, Imran Khaleel, because of his weight loss.

A panel at Central London Employment Tribunal found that Ma had been discriminated against on grounds of sexual orientation. They ordered Hakkasan Limited, which owns Yauatcha along with the Wagamama chain, to pay Ma £21,571 for lost earnings and injury to feelings.

Ma said, according to the Daily Mail, “I am delighted to have won but the money cannot compensate me for the harassment and humiliation I experienced at work”.
