Rutgers University – the biggest university in New Jersey, USA – has bowed to pressure from gay students and will provide ‘gender neutral housing’ for its students starting this autumn.
Over 100 new students will be given the option of sharing a room with either a male or female roommate.
US universities Columbia University, George Washington University, Emory University, Ohio University and Ramapo College already allow students to choose the gender of their roommates.
The decision to allow opposite-sex roommates at Rutgers is thought to have been provoked by the death of freshman Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide after his roommate filmed him having sex with another man and posted it on the internet.
