newyorkThe New York State senate has passed a landmark ruling permitting gay marriage ceremonies.

New York is the largest state so far to allow same-sex weddings, joining Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, the Washington capital district and the Coquille Indian tribe in Oregon.

Couples are expected to be able to marry in 29 days time, 30 days after governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill last night.

The ruling does not require those marrying to be New York state citizens.
