scottishflagPoliticians predict same-sex marriage will be legal in Scotland within 12 to 18 months

Equality for same-sex couples who want to marry in Scotland could become a reality in 12 to 18 months says Scottish Labour MSP Jackie Baillie.

Baillie was quoted as saying to Gay Star News at a parliamentary reception  ‘I would say [marriage equality] it would be 18 months at the outside – but definitely next year,’ she said.

The Scottish government received an overwhelming response to the consultation on gay marriage. Scottish Nationalist MSP Patrick Harvey said ‘All the responses have to be gone through and considered by the government.’

While the Scottish government is yet to publish the hotly debated bill – it is widely predicted that it will be before the summer with a positive outcome for gay rights activists. The leaders of Holyrood’s opposition parties, Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrats and the Green Party yesterday signed a pledge which declared that they would “campaign to beat the ban on same sex marriage”.
