dewaniA court was told yesterday how murder suspect Shrien Dewani confided in a gay escort that he wanted to ‘find a way out’ of his marriage.

Leopold Leisser, 39, from Munich states that Dewani made the comments seven months prior to Anni Hindocha’s murder in Cape Town.

Hugo Keith QC told the court that Dewani dislosed to ‘a significant witness’, confirmed as Leisser by a family source, how he was engaged and had to get married.

“He said although she was a nice, lovely girl, who he liked, he could not break out of the engagement because he would be disowned by his family. He went on to say he needed to find a way out of it.”

There is no evidence that Dewani paid the German for his services. However the court was told that he would be prone to sexual assault in prison if there was a suggestion of homosexuality. Sasha Gear, from Johannesburg’s Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation, said: “Inmates perceived to be gay would be vulnerable.”.

Dewani, 31, is accused of plotting to kill his wife in an organised car jacking in November 2010. He is alleged to have paid £1,370 to a south African taxi driver to get Anni ‘taken off the scene’.
