policecompA man has been accused of assaulting a barman outside the Three Horseshoes pub in Pinxton after midnight on October 21 because he was gay.

22 year-old Ashley Dale was standing on the corner of the street when he started shouting abuse at the man with reference to his sexuality.

Prosecutor Christopher Reynolds said that Mr Dale was in a ‘menacing’ mood has he approached his openly gay victim.

Mr Reynolds said: “The defendant grabbed his shoulder and spun him around and he fell and banged his head on the ground.

“His head was bleeding and he ran to the pub and hammered on the door.  Staff opened it and called police.”

Mr Dale of Pinxton admitted the assault, and Magistrates said the offence was more serious if it was prejudiced against the victim’s sexual preference.

Bob Bashforth, for Dale, said: “He denies making any homophobic comments.  He didn’t know (the man) was gay.”

There will be a mini-trial to decide whether or not the attack was motivated by homophobia.
