It’s claimed that an Irish Labour party advert showing Sinn Féin leader, Gerry Adams, and Fianna Fail leader, Micheal Martin, photoshopped as a gay couple was “drafted but not actually commissioned”, said a Labour party spokesperson.

According to the Sunday Independent, the advert carries the text: “This is one marriage we should vote NO to this year” and is understood to be one of several prepared for Labour by an ad agency.

Labour, Sinn Féin and Fianna Fail all backed equal marriage ahead of last year’s referendum, which saw Ireland approve same-sex marriage by public opinion.

According to Labour Cllr Dermot Lacey, the advert “was not approved by any unit of the Labour Party”.

“As one element of our campaign, we considered some draft adverts to make a serious point in a light-hearted way,” a Labour spokesperson said.

“This version makes the point that at the next election, voters will have a choice between the stable, balanced government offered by Labour and Fine Gael – or a marriage of convenience between Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin that would destroy Ireland’s hard-won progress over the last five years.

“Fianna Fáil caused the bust in the first place and Sinn Féin would return us to bust with their policies. The ad was drafted but not actually commissioned.”

Irish LGBT groups have stated that the ad does not have homophobic connotations.
