It’s been announced that former rugby player Gareth Thomas is to make his debut in pantomime later this year. The 37-year-old gay sportsman, who appeared on Celebrity Big Brother earlier this year, will play the part of the Genie in a production of Aladdin at the Stiwt Theatre in Wrexham, Wales from 11 December 2012 until 2 January 2013. Speaking at the press launched for the production, Thomas said “I am never one to back away from a challenge and try something new, so when I was offered this opportunity I thought it was too good to turn down.” “Having played rugby in Wrexham for two years it will also be a good opportunity to catch up with old friends in the area.” Thomas is Wales’ most-capped rugby union player, with 93 appearances for his country. He came out as gay in December 2009, and was voted Stonewall’s ‘Hero of the Year’ in late 2010.
